Summer Celebrations And Protests
June is the beginning of summer. The Covid-19 restrictions will be lifted on the 15th and we can’t wait to go anywhere and see family and friends.
June is also LGBTQ+ Pride month. The Stonewall Riots began on June 28, 1969 in New York City after a police raid of the Stonewall Inn patronized by gay men. Six days of protests and clashes with police ensued. That was the beginning of the fight for equal rights for gays and lesbians. Today we can love who we want, be our true selves and finally society has accepted us. Sacramento Pride’s leaders have opted for smaller events throughout the month around the region. Go to sacramentopride.org for more information.

Juneteenth is a black holiday celebrating the freedom of Texas slaves who weren’t told about President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation until June 19, 1865. The 25th Corps with 16,000 Black Union soldiers took control of Galveston, Texas setting all Black people free.
