Lauren joined the National Women's Political Caucus in 2009-2010 when the Sacramento Chapter was originally formed to further the cause of putting more women in public office at all levels. She renewed her membership in August 2019 in honor of the 99th Anniversary of Women's Rights to Vote. In 2020, the Board of NWPC named Lauren as President of the Sacramento Chapter to serve for two years. Athol Wong is an advocate for women's rights at least since she was in seventh grade and asked the Dean of Girls why she couldn't take woodshop instead of home economics. She entered a career in public education determined to challenge outdated and unfair practices for all students, especially for girls. One of her proudest moments was learning as a high school principal that the district superintendent told a colleague that "being Athol Wong's boss is a contradiction in terms." After retirement in 2015, she moved to Sacramento and now devotes energy to NWPC and its efforts to see more women run successful political campaigns.
Kenya Spearman is NWPC-Sacramento's elected Secretary. She works conscientiously and collaboratively with fellow board members to actualize NWPC's mission on a local basis.
In 2019, as a result of a speech by Sacramento City Council Member Angelique Ashby, Michelle became aware that, not only was there only one woman on the Sacramento City council, but that women officials were not sufficiently represented in other city and county offices in Sacramento as well. Council Member Ashby also stressed why it was important for women to be “at the table.” As a result, Michelle was inspired to join NWPC Sacramento to develop, support, and fund women candidates for local and statewide offices. Karen Humphrey is past President of the National Women’s Political Caucus of California, the state chapter of a national organization that has worked to elect progressive pro-choice women since 1971. Her varied 45-year career in communications, public service, and education included television news reporting; serving as a Fresno City Council member and Fresno’s first woman Mayor; and working as Senior Advisor to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Delaine Eastin. Patty Gainer is very involved in this community and in politics. She joined NWPC in 2019 and is also a member of Capital Women's Campaign and Women Democrats of Sacramento. Patty worked for the Bernie Sanders' Presidential Campaign for the 2020 election and currently serves as Vice President of Wellstone Progressive Democrats of Sacramento. She also serves on the Resident Council where she lives. In 2018, she was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve on the Sacramento County Disability Advisory Commission. See more...
